Understanding Side Effects and Achieving Natural Results

Botulinum toxin has an excellent safety record, having been used for decades in various medical applications. A common misconception is that it completely paralyses facial muscles. In reality, skilled practitioners like Dr. Charlson use extremely small, precise doses to relax specific muscles, reducing unwanted grimaces and frowns while allowing for natural expression. The goal is to achieve a refreshed, rested, and naturally happier appearance, not a “frozen” look.

While side effects are rare, they can occur. Most are mild, short-lived, and often relate to injection technique. With over ten thousand toxin treatments performed, Dr. Charlson is highly adept at addressing any concerns that may arise or advising you accordingly. Common minor side effects can include:

  • Bruising at the injection site
  • Headache
  • Mild eyelid or eyebrow droop
  • Watery eyes or light sensitivity

Eye drops are available if eyelid droop occurs. While rare, lower face and neck treatments can have different potential side effects, such as temporary difficulty chewing or swallowing.

Our Approach to Optimal Outcomes

We understand that treatments don’t always go exactly to plan, and minor adjustments may be needed. That’s why our prices include an adjustment appointment to ensure optimal and balanced results. If you experience any issues or the outcome isn’t what you expected, please tell us. While we can’t always change an outcome, we can usually explain what has happened.

The key to a successful anti-wrinkle treatment is a natural, refreshed look, not an artificial or “startled” appearance. Dr. Charlson’s extensive experience and deep understanding of facial musculature enable him to achieve this consistently.

We also offer a bespoke service to help correct issues caused by other practitioners. This might involve dissolving fillers with hyaluronidase or adjusting botulinum toxin treatments to balance an outcome. Our aim is always to provide solutions or clear explanations to help you achieve your aesthetic goals.

FAQs

How does Botox work?

We inject a purified protein that relaxes small facial muscles. It is most often used for cosmetic purposes in the small muscles of the face which contributes to frown lines, crow’s feet, forehead or lip lines, and down-turned corners of the mouth. It is also used and licensed for medical indications.

Can I have a consultation and treatment in one visit?

Yes – doctors can consult and administer in one convenient treatment, as they are allowed to keep stock. Nurses are not allowed to keep stock of POM drugs and legally have to order drug in for each individual patient.

Why the bad press around cosmetic injections?

The UK’s cosmetic injection market is unregulated, unlike many other countries where only doctors can treat. This means poorly trained individuals, sometimes with only a day’s training, are offering procedures. The government is reviewing this for consumer safety.

Always choose a professionally regulated, trained, and insured practitioner for your safety.

Are there any side effects?

Because of the tiny doses that are used for facial wrinkling, no significant side effects have been reported. Patients sometimes have a feeling of stiffness or numbness in the area injected, however, as the nerves of touch are unaffected, this sensation is transient and disappears in a few days.

How long until I see results and how long do they last?

You’ll typically see the effects of treatment in 7 to 10 days, though some notice changes in as little as 3. Most patients experience 90% muscle relaxation.

The effects generally last 3 to 5 months for most patients, though studies show it can extend from 3 to 8 months for upper facial wrinkles. Many clients choose to have repeated injections, usually three times a year, to maintain results long-term. With continued treatment, the effects can become more lasting.

Is this treatment related to botulism?

Yes, the active ingredient is the same, but it’s crucial to understand the difference. Botulism poisoning occurs from large amounts of toxin, usually ingested from contaminated food, affecting the entire body.

In contrast, cosmetic treatments use extremely small, highly diluted doses (under 50 units) injected very safely into specific facial muscles. Over 20 years of clinical studies confirm Botox is both effective and safe when administered by a skilled professional who targets precise injection sites for the desired cosmetic effect.

Do Botox injections hurt?

There is no irritation or inflammation. Occasionally there may be a very mild sting. Certainly, but no anesthesia is needed prior to injections. However, we have found that our clients’ sensitivity varies enormously and we offer anaesthetic cream for those who want to use it. We use tiny needles.

Are there any interactions with other drugs?

It is always important to let your doctor know if you are taking any other drugs, especially antibiotics such as amino glycoside. These types of antibiotics may increase the effect of Botox.

How do I know my doctor won’t give me too much toxin?

Dr Paul Charlson has been treating patients with Botox since 2001. He is fully trained and we only use properly sourced products from reputable suppliers with professional quality control.

Is there anyone that can’t receive treatment?

Pregnant women, nursing mothers, or people who have myasthenia gravis or muscle diseases.

Why do some Botox treatments look uneven?

This happens when the injector doesn’t have the skill or basic understanding of the facial anatomy to know where to place fine adjustments to even up your facial muscles. There is no formal training scheme or regulation for cosmetic injections and unfortunately there are many practitioners who have very little experience and scant knowledge.

Will Botox freeze my forehead, make it mask-like and shiny?

Dr Paul Charlson has administered so many treatments he is able to ‘relax’ around 90% of muscle activity and allow for a natural result. Lines and wrinkles are smoothed out and, as the muscles are not contracted they start to get smaller and the lines less deep.
