Dermal Filler Side Effects

Dermal filler side effects are rare and usually transient, they have an excellent safety profile when injected by an experienced doctor. It is possible to suffer bruising and temporary swelling at the injection site.
More serious side effects occur if the dermal filler is mistakenly injected into a blood vessel. This subsequently obstructs blood flow and oxygen supply to the surrounding tissue which leads to tissue necrosis.

Occasionally, too much filler may be injected into the treatment area and the client will request that some of it is removed.

Removal of HA dermal fillers (or hyaluronic acid) is achieved quickly and easily by the use of an enzyme hyaluronidase. There are other dermal fillers that cannot be removed with hyaluronidase as they are not HA products.

Removing Unwanted Filler

Hyaluronidase will remove unwanted dermal filler. The filler may need to be removed for a variety of reasons such as adverse effects, over treatment or personal preference. Doctors are the only practitioners that can legally stock hyaluronidase as it is a POM, this means they are the only practitioners that can provide a comprehensive, professional after care service.

Hyaluronidase can rapidly reverse the effects of hyaluronic acid fillers. It is a very safe product. When used in small doses, it can quickly reverse the effect of the most common fillers such as Restylane and Juvederm. It has no visible effects itself and when the filler is gone, the net result will be a return to the pre-filler correction state. It does not result in the loss of natural HA in the skin.

Jawline Filler: Before & After

Chin & Jawline Enhancement at Skinqure

A well-defined chin and jawline can significantly enhance your facial harmony and attractiveness. At SkinQure, Dr Paul Charlson specialises in using dermal fillers to expertly sculpt and refine these areas, creating a balanced and aesthetically pleasing profile. We consider both frontal and side views to achieve optimal results.

We frequently use Radiesse, an FDA-approved dermal filler, to create a sharper, more pronounced jawline and strengthen the chin. This popular treatment typically takes around 30 minutes, and we prioritise your comfort and safety by using cannulas to minimise pain and bruising.

Results from dermal fillers usually last 6 to 9 months.

Complementing Treatments

To further enhance your results, Dr Charlson may also suggest:

  • Botox for a “pebbly” chin or a Nefertiti neck lift.
  • HIFU for jawline tightening.
  • Thread lifting to reposition fat pads.

We’ll discuss the best options for your individual goals during your consultation.

FAQs

What are dermal fillers?

Dermal Fillers are a group of gel substances which are used in facial aesthetics to contour, add volume or plump up areas where wrinkles and folds have appeared due to ageing or scarring. Dermal fillers are usually based on Hyaluronic Acid (HA) which occurs naturally in our skin and joints to hydrate and lubricate. Unfortunately we produce less HA as we age, which leads to dehydration, lack of volume, drooping and deepening of lines and wrinkles. HA binds with water increasing hydration.

Who can administer dermal fillers?

Dermal Fillers can be administered by anyone, it is up to the consumer to check their training and qualifications. It is possible to set yourself up as an injector after a couple of hours ‘training’ with no knowledge of the underlying anatomy of the face. Without knowledge of the placement of underlying blood vessels, dermal fillers treatments can lead to blockage of these vessels which prevents oxygenation of facial tissue and subsequent tissue death.

Who can’t have dermal fillers?

Virtually any adult can have filler treatment either as an anti aging treatment or to enhance naural features such as lips or cheeks. Anyone with a previous allergic reaction to a Dermal Filler or someone with a allergy to Lidocaine MAY still be treated at after consultation.

What should I do after treatment?

Following your treatment you can expect some local swelling and maybe bruising, a cold compress may help ease this, and arnica cream may be recommended to encourage the bruise to come out. It is often asked that you avoid any vigorous exercise or sun exposure for 24-48hrs.

How long will the effects last?

Dermal Fillers are long-lasting but not permanent, depending on the product used they usually last between 6-8 months to 18 months but this can vary for different individuals. Injection efficiency also influences the longevity as does your skin’s ability to build up natural collagen.

Are dermal fillers safe?

There are well over a hundred fillers available on the European market and some are not manufactured to the highest standards, we only use trusted fillers from highly reputable manufacturers. We are always available for follow up appointments and advice. We always administer treatments in a hygienic, safe and clean environment. We may prescribe antibiotics in certain cases.
