What is Skin Ageing?
Skin ageing is a complex process with two main types:
- Intrinsic ageing: This is a natural, unavoidable process that begins in your 20s. It is influenced by genetics, and its effects can be seen in fine lines, a thinner epidermis, and less elastic skin.
- Extrinsic ageing: This is caused by environmental factors, with UV radiation being the most significant. Other factors include pollution, tobacco smoke, and poor nutrition. Extrinsic ageing leads to photo-ageing, which is characterized by deep wrinkles, age spots (lentigo), and telangiectasias (spider veins).
How to Prevent Skin Ageing
The main ways to prevent skin ageing are to avoid the sun and stop smoking.
- Sun Protection: The most effective way to prevent photo-ageing is to use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with a high sun protection factor (SPF) of 30 or more. Sunscreens can also reverse some of the early signs of photo-ageing and prevent some skin cancers.
- Smoking Cessation: Smoking is known to accelerate both intrinsic and extrinsic ageing. The toxic chemicals in cigarettes contribute to the degradation of collagen and elastin, leading to a dull complexion and premature wrinkling.
- Antioxidants: Antioxidants, such as vitamin C, can also help to prevent ageing by protecting against free radicals.
- Retinoids: These can be used to treat existing skin damage and reverse the signs of photo-ageing.
