This paper, published in “Aesthetic Dermatology” focuses on non-surgical treatments for skin laxity, or skin sagging, which is a common concern as we age. To gain a complete understanding of this topic, including the different types of treatments and how they work, we encourage you to download the full paper.
What Causes Skin Laxity?
Skin laxity is a complex process caused by a number of factors, including:
- A loss of subcutaneous fat
- Bone resorption
- Changes to the muscles and connective tissue
- Degradation of collagen and elastin
As we age, the number and activity of fibroblasts—the cells responsible for producing collagen and elastin—decrease, leading to a breakdown of the extracellular matrix. This loss of structural integrity results in the sagging and wrinkles we associate with skin ageing.
Non-Surgical Treatments
A variety of non-surgical treatments are available to address skin laxity. These treatments generally work by stimulating the production of new collagen and elastin, which helps to tighten the skin.
- Radiofrequency (RF) therapy: This treatment uses heat to stimulate collagen production. It can be a good option for mild skin laxity and is considered safe and relatively comfortable.
- Microneedling: This procedure uses tiny needles to create micro-injuries in the skin, which triggers the body’s natural healing response and stimulates collagen production.
- High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU): This technology uses focused ultrasound energy to heat the deeper layers of the skin, causing a thermal injury that triggers collagen and elastin production. It is a more intense treatment than RF therapy and is often used for moderate to severe skin laxity.
- Hyaluronic Acid (HA) Fillers: While primarily used to add volume, some HA fillers can also help to stimulate collagen production and improve skin texture.
